Mid-June Book Porn

Another busy week at work, but to break the dry spell here, thought I'd share pictures of recent review copies and books purchased.  It seems I might have been placed on a literary ARC list.  Not that I am complaining about it (more likely to read those unsolicited copies than I am for the urban fantasy review copies I receive), but just noting something that might be a belated connection to last year's run as Best American Fantasy series editor.

Any of these appeal to you?

M.J. Engh's Arslan is the only one here that really appeals to me, though I am not at all fond of its title.

What I Didn't See and The Book of Life both sound interesting, but I think I have established previously that short fiction and I do not get along well. The same can be said of YA fiction, which just doesn't seem to work for me since my attempts have seen me either putting the book down early or coming out the other side highly disappointed.

Shadow's Lure holds about as much appeal to me as the first book did, which is to say, none at all. The Carey might hold more appeal for me if I was more than a book an a quarter into the first trilogy, but these books are mixed bags for me and slow going (I like the S&M, but the books are overwritten and a bit of a slog), so I am sure it will be quite a while before I get far enough in to summon up some interest.

I'm also interested in Arslan - I've read a number of reviews and they've been wonderfully conflicted.

Of the others: I've read the Sherman Alexie and the Karen Joy Fowler (as you know!)amd am not particularly interested in any of the others. The Jaqueline Carey books simply don't work for me.

Arslan is very good so far (nearly 1/2 done). What I Didn't See has some really good stories and The Book of Life is promising after the first couple. Haven't yet started on any of the others, although I'd have to read several other Carey books in order to be able to understand this current one and the Sprunk one isn't likely to be read due to more interesting books threatening to swamp me at the moment.
